First double-hook salmon fly

dryfly.me.2014.01.18.double_salmonHook: Kamasan B280 #6
Thread: Sheer 14/0 Black
Tag: Lagartun Varnished Frensh Tinsel Oval X-Strong Medium
Tail: Golden Pheasant topping
Butt: Ostrich
Body: UNI Floss Black, Lagartun Varnished Frensh Tinsel Oval X-Strong Medium
Wing: Blue & Black Templedog
Cheek: JC
Varnish: Veniard No.1 Clear

A first for me today: a double-hook salmon fly. I have never had any double-hooks available, but I was in the local flytyer shop and I picked up a box of Kamasan B280 in #6 to do some experimenting. This blue/black wing pattern should prove very effective, the pattern itself is very simple and doesn’t include many materials. In fact: you can easily cut out the ostrich, golden pheasant tip and the JC and still stand with a very good fly!

3 tube flies with different hackle color

dryfly.me.2014.01.15.red_tag_tube_colors_togetherTail: Arctic Fox
Body: UNI Floss Green, Lagartun French Tinsel rib
Wing: Arctic Fox Red, Templedog Black
Hackle: Wapsi Strung Schlappen in different colors

Spent some time with different hackle colors on the same base pattern to see how they turn out on the fly. The long hackle on the Wapsi packages is good for these sized tubes, but I really should get some skins with different length to be able to adjust to the pattern instead of letting the hackle dictate the size of the fly.

The red hackle came out the best together with the rest of the body:

Red Buzzer with yellow Turkey Biot Cheeks

dryfly.me.2014.01.13.red_buzzer_yellow_cheekHook: Kamasan B100 #12
Thread: Sheer 14/0 Brown
Resin: Bug-Bond LITE
Body: UNI Floss Red, UNI-Mylar peacock
Thorax: UNI Floss Black
Cheek: Hareline Turkey Biot Quills Yellow

The previous bug-bond bottle I had was too thick for the small buzzers so I got myself a new bottle with the LITE version that is much more appropriate when creating small bodies like this. The red floss soaks up a lot of the bug-bond and gets a lot darker, so I will continue to see what material will be best for these kinds of flies. The other thing I wanted to test out was to use Turkey Biot Quills for cheeks on the buzzer, and I think that worked out fine: the bug-bond doesn’t discolor it and it is easy to work with.

The other new thing with this fly was the hook: a Kamasan B100 Shrimp/Buzzer hook that I haven’t tied on before. My initial feel for it is good: it is thin but strong and it has a nice big gap that will make this hook perfect for emergers and buzzers.

52 Weeks: 2 – Black and White

dryfly.me.2014.01.12.black_and_whiteHook: Kamasan B100 #12
Thread: Sheer 14/0 White
Body: UNI Floss White, Prowrap Nylon (rod-wrap thread)
Thorax: Hends Superfine
Wing: Wapsi Polyproplylene
Bead: Flysite 3.0mm Pearl White

Second week of the challenge brings the keyword “Black and White”, I took the picture below earlier for the challenge and when I got home I was inspired to do something simple that reflected todays picture: black on white. I think it came out really good

Tube: Fire Tail

dryfly.me.2014.01.10.tube_fire_tailTail: Foxtail Suburst yellow, Templedog hot orange
Body: UNI Floss, Lagartun french tinsel
Hackle: Spirit River Schlappen Black

This was a freestyle with what I had on my table, but I really like how it came out: the fire in the tail will be a very good attractor for the salmon/seatrout and it will have good movements once it gets in the water. Will create some more of this color combination, and maybe with blue/lime tail as well.
