Red Claret Spey

2015.02.15.dryfly.me.red_claret_speyHook: Daiichi 2052 #1.5
Thread: Sheer 14/0 Black
Body: Underbody UNI-Floss white, Lagartun Red Claret French Silk Floss
Rib: No-brand gold
Hackle: Heron
Wing: Veniard Mallard Bronze Large

A freestyle spey where I wanted to have as few materials as possible, work on the body profile and try to not overload the fly with too much of the materials I used.

The lagartun silk floss with the gold rib really stands out on this one, the taper of the body is also one that I’m very happy with – it goes smoothly from start to finish. The one thing I could work on is the wing, I did it high over the body (and not really low-set) with purpose, and I’m quite happy with that, but the smoothness of the wing from some angles are not the best, so I’ll put another version up later.

Blue Charm Wet

Thread: UNI 6/0 Black
Tag: UNI-French Medium Oval, Lagartun Floss-Silk Yello
Tail: GP
Body: UNI-Floss Black
Rib: :UNI-French Medium Oval
Wing: Black Underfur
Hackle: Keough Hen Saddle

Taking the blue charm down to a #6 trout hook I chose to substitute the wing from squirrel to black underfur and set the blue hackle in front of the wing due to the shape of the hook and the build-up that squirrel makes. But the main colors and composition from the blue charm remains. A great little wet that goes into the large amount of different blue charms I’ve created this winter!

Silver & Squirrel Double

2015.01.05.dryfly.me.silver_rabbit_4Hook: Kamasan B280 #4&#8, Partridge Patriot #8
Thread: UNI 6/0 Red
Tag: UNI-French Medium Oval
Tail: GP
Body: underbody of UNI-Floss, UNI-Mylar #16
Rib: UNI-French Medium Oval
Wing: Squirrel
Hackle: Whiting Dryfly neck, Rooster Saddle Grizzly (depending on size)

A pattern on facebook got me in the direction of this fly, a grey&silver some might call it, but I used what I had to create this double on different hook sizes.

The all-silver body combined with a thin wing and trying to have a sparse hackle will make this sink quickly in the current and give a lot of visual feedback. I’ll tie this one up on singles and on tube as well, but I’ll do that later, for now I’m on a double rush!

2015.01.05.dryfly.me.silver_rabbit_8The head on the smallest one did not come out very good, but it will catch some fish anyway:

Blue Cascade

Tail: Blue/Yellow Bucktail, Blue Flash
Body: UNI-Floss Black
Rib: UNI-French Oval Medium
Wing: Fox
Hackle: The Fly.Co Streamer Rooster Neck #1 Yellow, Keough Hen Saddle Blue

A blue version of the cascade salmon pattern that should work fine for seatrout around here as well. This version is very heavily dressed compared to earlier cascade I have done, but this was with purpose to have big movement in the water.

Blue Charm Spey

2015.01.01.dryfly.me.blue_charm_speyHook: Alec Jackson Spey #1.5 Bronze
Thread: UNI 6/0 Black
Tag: UNI-French Oval Medium, Lagartun French Silk Floss
Body: UNI-Floss Black
Rib: UNI-French Oval Medium
Hackle: Spirit River Spey Hackle Bright Blue
Wing: Squirrel tail as underwing, 2 layers of Mallard bronze shoulder over

A fresh start of the new year brings a large variant of the Blue Charm to this great spey hook from Alec Jackson! The squirrel underwing on this is generous to make the wing layer of Mallard sit nicely, that is also why the head became rather large, but not much one can do about that. I chose to not have a topping over it all, but for the next tie-up I’ll add that as well. I would also need some more of the blue spey hackle soon, or get a heron substitute to make some more of this for my box.

Happy New Year to all the readers I have here on dryfly.me!
