Preparing for the summer and filling up my box with this silver doctor inspired tube. Doing some without and some with cone to be able to target different depths:

2015.04.18.dryfly.me.tubesHave started to do up the body separately now to focus on one and one thing, that way I can do lots of tinsel work first, then pull out the hair and do the hairwing later.

Green Peacock Salmon Fly

2015.02.15.dryfly.me.green_peacockHook: Daiichi 2052 #1.5
Thread: Sheer 14/0 Black
Tag: UTC French Tinsel Medium, Lagartun Silk Floss
Tail: GP
Body: underbody of white UNI-Floss, UNI-Floss Doctor Blue
Rib: UNI-French Medium Oval
Hackle: Keough Hen Saddle
Wing: Wapsi Peacock Swords Bright Green

I found this pattern after T.E. Pryce-Tannatt on traditionalflies.com. I just got some peacock swords for tying up Rusty Rat and was looking for something else to use them for, in addition I got my first package of the Daiichi 2052 silvers and the combination of these came out quite nice.

Recently I have been looking for (and testing out) new varnish for finishing up the heads for salmon flies, and on friday I got some Hard Head from Loon that I’m really happy with so far – they are not too runny, sets really nice on the head and is easy to work with. More about that later though, have a good sunday!

Blue Charm

Body: Lagartun French Silk Floss
Rib: UTC French Tinsel Medium
Throat: Keough Hen Saddle Blue
Wing: Wapsi Squirrel Tail Blue/Tan

The blue charm with squirrel tail is one that shows up a lot of places when you start looking at salmon patterns, I have done some of them earlier, but then with a rather stiff cock hackle. This week I got some hen saddle and two different colors of squirrel tail, so I tied up these to go in my salmon box.

The blue charm is a great pattern that can work for both salmon and seatrout,  it is not a very hard pattern to tackle, but make sure that the squirrel is tied in well: it has quite the slick surface on the hairs – use a waxed thread or ensure that it is well locked in before tying off!

Cascade

Rib: UTC French Tinsel
Wing: Black Hair
Hackle: Yellow & Red

I got 50 Partridge Patriot yesterday and had to test it out by tying up some cascade. I haven’t tied on this hook before or fished this pattern, but the hook looks and feels solid and the pattern should be good for both salmon and seatrout.

Spey Style #3/0

Hook: Partridge Bartleet Blind-Eye #3/0
Gut: Feathers MC Twisted Silk Gut Medium
Thread: Sheer 14/0 Black
Body: UNI-Floss White underbody, UNI-Floss Black
Rib: UNI-Mylar Silver #10, UNI-French Gold Oval Small, Lagartun Varnished French Tinsel Oval X-Strong Fine, UNI-Mylar #16 reverse to support hackle
Hackle: Spirit River Spey Hackle
Wing: Veniard Mallard Duck Bronze Large
Throat: Strung Guinea Natural

The Spey and Dee style flies have a look that attract me when it comes to style and execution, this one is a freestyle over a general spey based on the materials I have available. It turned out to be a exercise in rib and layering of the body that I haven’t done before.

I had to stretch the mallard duck to find something that would fit a hook this size, it didn’t come together perfectly: there are some strands that didn’t sit together perfectly, but I got the overall flow of the wing this time.

The ribbing: 3 strands going over the body and one reverse over the hackle to keep it in place. Really pleased with how this came out in the end.
