Blue Double for seatrout and salmon

dryfly.me.2014.04.11.blue_doubleHook: Kamasan B280 #6
Thread: Sheer 14/0 Black
Tail: Dyed Golden Pheasant Tippets Orange
Tag: UTC French Tinsel
Body: Horns Soft Salmon Dub Kingfisher Blue
Rib: UTC French Tinsel
Wing: Brown & Blue templedog, silver flash
Sides: JC

This one started with the dubbing: I got some good kingfisher blue from Horns the other day and I built this fly around that color. The dubbing is great and I found some templedog that matched in color. I really tried to keep it down in number of materials and not have it super-big when it came to the wing. This one I will tie up in different variations before I even have fished it: one that I just “know” will work when it hit the water

Comet Variations

Single hook: Dai-Riki 899 #1/0
Double hook: Kamasan B280 #6
Tag: Lagartun French Tinsel
Tail: Golden Pheasant
Body: Red/Black UNI Floss, Lagartun French Tinsel
Wing: Yellow & Red Templedog, Yellow Flash, Black Templedog, Silver Flash
Sides: JC

As I’ve noted before: I try to tie up a pattern in different colors, or, as in this case: different types to see how they come together. Today it was a repetition of the comet from the other day. I really like this pattern and the double will see some smaller variants down to #12 for trout.

Blue & Green Double

dryfly.me.2014.03.15.blue_green_doubleHook: Kamasan B280 #6
Tag: Lagartun French Tinsel
Body: Taimen Seals Fur Green Highlander
Rib: Lagartun French Tinsel
Body Hackle: Veniard Chinese Cock Cape Doctor Blue
Wing: Blue & Green Fox, Green Flash
Sides: JC

I often sit down and try to see how colors blend together and try to figure out how they will work. Many times I get the inspiration from other tiers on facebook, G+, forums and so on: I see some hook or pattern and I get a idea on what I want to do. Lately I have looked at a lot of dee flies and done a lot of big-wing tubes, so I try to mix it up like this: the concept of long body hackle and a hair-wing.

This one I will bring with me when I go seatrout fishing

Black & Silver Salmon

dryfly.me.2013.12.067.black_and_silverHook: Dai-Riki 899 #1/0
Thread: UNI 6/0 Black
Tag: UNI-French
Body:UNI Floss Black, UNI-French
Wing: Sunburst Yellow Foxtail, Orange Foxtail, Red Arctic Fox 3xl, peacock
Hackle: Black hackle
Head: JC, Black Ostrich Herl

Of the ones I have tied on this #1/0 hook I think this is the one I’m the most pleased with: the propotions are better, the overwing sits better in its place and the JC is a very good visual indicator. I need a better hackle to tie in on this and the tube flies that I’m starting to tie so I’m heading out tomorrow to do some pre-christmas present-shopping for myself ;)

Silver & Orange streamer

dryfly.me.2013.10.11.streamer_orange_silverHook: Allen S401 6xl #6
Thread:UNI 6/0 Black
Tail: Orange Goose Shoulder Orange
Body: UNI-Mylar #10, UNI-French Oval Md Silver
Wing: Peacock Sword, Blue Bucktail
Beard: White Bucktail, Orange Goose Shoulder
Sides: Jungle Cock

Got a shipment of these long streamer hooks from Allen Flyfishing the other day and freestyled this long streamer. First time I’ve tied on a hook this long and I’m quite pleased with how it turned out: long, slim and with a distinct trigger color on the beard and tail.
