Orange Spey

dryfly.me.2015.11.24.orange

Hook: Daiichi 2052 #1.5
Thread: UNI 6/0 White
Body: 1st half UNI-Floss orange, 2nd half Sealsfur
Rib: UNI Mylar,Veevus M
Hackle: Black Heron, Mallard
Wing: Orange Whiting Rooster
Head: Loon Hard Head Orange

The first spey I have done with the traditional full feather wing. I got a rooster neck from silverfishing the other day and I just had to do a spey fly with it. Great colors here, easy to tie up and should be super effective in the water!

Red Claret Spey

2015.02.15.dryfly.me.red_claret_speyHook: Daiichi 2052 #1.5
Thread: Sheer 14/0 Black
Body: Underbody UNI-Floss white, Lagartun Red Claret French Silk Floss
Rib: No-brand gold
Hackle: Heron
Wing: Veniard Mallard Bronze Large

A freestyle spey where I wanted to have as few materials as possible, work on the body profile and try to not overload the fly with too much of the materials I used.

The lagartun silk floss with the gold rib really stands out on this one, the taper of the body is also one that I’m very happy with – it goes smoothly from start to finish. The one thing I could work on is the wing, I did it high over the body (and not really low-set) with purpose, and I’m quite happy with that, but the smoothness of the wing from some angles are not the best, so I’ll put another version up later.

Green Butt Spey

2015.01.24.dryfly.me.grey_but_speyHook: Alec Jackson Spey #1.5
Thread: UNI 6/0 Black
Tag: UNI-French Medium Oval
Body: First half green Glo-Brite Fluorescent Floss, second half peackock herl
Rib: UNI-French Medium Oval
Hackle: Black heron
Wing: Mallard Duck Bronze Shoulder

A fluorescent green spey! Inspiration came from a pattern on the facebook spey tyer page. Tried to keep this slim and not fill it with too much material, and I think I succeeded in that: it is slim, just two turns of hackle and a overall slim profile. This will swim very well!

Rotenon Spey

2015.01.01.dryfly.me.rotenon_spey

Hook: Alec Jackson Spey #1.5
Thread: UNI 6/0
Butt: Seals Fur Fluo XX-Mix from Eivind Berulfsen
Tail: GP
Body: UNI-Floss
Rib: UNI-French Oval Medium
Wing: Fox
Hackle: Heron Black, Keough Hen Saddle Blue

A pattern I picked up from granbo-flyfishing.no, and since I’m on a spey roll these days I figured I could give the spey version a try. My change is the red butt: the article about the Rotenon gives floss or silkbraid as butt, but since I don’t have that and I do have a lot of the red UV seals fur, I thought I’d give that a try.

The fly is very lightly dressed and is very light in hand, even though it is on the large #1.5 spey hook. I like this pattern: I’ll dress up some on double and smaller single to keep in my box.
