52 Weeks: 3 – Self portrait

dryfly.me.2014-03.self_portraitThis weeks challenge was a bit tricky: should I tie something that reflects my eye color, my favorite color or something else? For a while I was stumped on what to do, but then I took my personal picture below that sums up me at the moment, and hiphop is at the center in the picture. So: hiphop it was, I couldn’t do a very creative graffiti style, but needed something that I could relate to. The salmon fly above is what I came up with, I call it “Adidas superstar” with gold stripes (the white thread on the rib represents the stitches on the shoe) and the shiny shell toe.

This is my favorite shoe and I always have a couple of colors (most often black /white ones) available. The adidas superstar and the three-stripes is something you will see if you look at old-school hiphop videos and breakdancing, so that is where I took the inspiration for this weeks theme, and hiphop is absolutely something that defines me.

Second week of the challenge brings the keyword “Black and White”, I took the picture below earlier for the challenge and when I got home I was inspired to do something simple that reflected todays picture: black on white. I think it came out really good

Testing out new flies

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAIt is january, but the weather is more like early April: 7 degrees and sun before I went out. Have tied a lot of new flies lately, and mainly tubes, that I needed to see how would work when they were fished. The day was beautiful with so many people on the beach: even some barbecue going on (unheard of at this time of year), and the weather changed into a cloudy afternoon.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAWe did see 2-3 fish up in the surface, but nothing would take the fly.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERASome new flies was tested and I got some input on what I need to do – one thing I needed the most was to add a bit of weight to the big hair-winged tube flies, those just didn’t fly right on my #6 rod

As mentioned: nothing would take, but I did find some potential great spots that is close to town!

52 Weeks: 1 – Begin at the beginning

dryfly.me.2014-01.begin_at_the_beginningFirst week of the 52 week challenge is “Begin at the beginning”,  I immediately went back to my little jar of the first flies that I tied two years ago. I remember tying up the red-tag, struggling with getting the body right, and tying off the thread…. So for this weeks keyword I had to do this little peacock/red-tag.

Here together with the first fly I created:

52 Weeks – 52 Flies

I have earlier tried the 365 days – 365 pictures on my norwegian blog, but that was by myself, this year we are a group at work that are doing 52 weeks – 52 pictures. With my passion for photography and flytying I immediately thought about doing 1 fly for each of the topics in the challenge. But that would be a bit boring for the rest of the group, so: this year I’m doing two challenges, one with normal pictures and one I’m doing here on dryfly.me. The challenge though is a bit interesting: I’m not doing traditional flies or patterns, but rather a freestyle fly that corresponds to the keyword I have for my photo challenge (you will see what I’m talking about once I start putting up the pictures).

As you can see from the list of keywords below, some of them might be a bit tricky, but it is the association between keyword and fly that is crucial. There is no correct fly for these keywords, as long as you can explain what you did and why you did it.

Each week I’ll end up with two photos, but if you want to tag along you can do just one!
