Spey Style #3/0

2014.10.26.dryfly.me.spey

Hook: Partridge Bartleet Blind-Eye #3/0
Gut: Feathers MC Twisted Silk Gut Medium
Thread: Sheer 14/0 Black
Body: UNI-Floss White underbody, UNI-Floss Black
Rib: UNI-Mylar Silver #10, UNI-French Gold Oval Small, Lagartun Varnished French Tinsel Oval X-Strong Fine, UNI-Mylar #16 reverse to support hackle
Hackle: Spirit River Spey Hackle
Wing: Veniard Mallard Duck Bronze Large
Throat: Strung Guinea Natural

The Spey and Dee style flies have a look that attract me when it comes to style and execution, this one is a freestyle over a general spey based on the materials I have available. It turned out to be a exercise in rib and layering of the body that I haven’t done before.

I had to stretch the mallard duck to find something that would fit a hook this size, it didn’t come together perfectly: there are some strands that didn’t sit together perfectly, but I got the overall flow of the wing this time.

The ribbing: 3 strands going over the body and one reverse over the hackle to keep it in place. Really pleased with how this came out in the end.

Mickey Streamer

After doing the hairwing mickey finn the other day I browsed alternative versions to see how this pattern has been interpreted in different versions (I enjoy exploring a pattern to see how it turns out in different versions, not just the original). The Mickey Streamer I found over at globalflyfisher.com together with some other variants that I will tie up later. The mickey streamer version is a married wing wet-fly style pattern in the color scheme of the original mickey finn, tied on a longer streamer hook than a classic wet would be done on.

Hairwing Mickey Finn

Hook: TMC 777SP #6
Thread: Red/Black UNI 6/0
Body: UNI-Mylar
Rib: Lagartun French Tinsel
Wing: Red/Yellow hair

A hairwing version of the classic Mickey Finn streamer. Normally you would see this in bucktail, but I wanted to have a smoother wing that flowed even more than bucktail (and I have alot of templedog/fox/raccoon), so a hairwing version it is. I might go over and varnish the body to strengthen it, but I used a fairly thick and solid rib, so I don’t think I will need to do that.

Blind Eye #3/0 freestyle

Thread: Sheer 14/0 Black
Tag: Lagartun French Tinsel, Yellow Floss
Tail: Golden Pheasant
Butt: Ostrich
Body: Yellow  & Black Floss
Rib: Lagartun French Tinsel, UNI-Mylar
Hackle: Spirit River Schlappen
Throat: Guinea
Sides: JC
Wing: Golden Pheasant Tail, Veinard Mallard Duck Bronze Shoulder

I bought some material to start off tying the classic atlantic salmon fly Jock Scott, but I realized that I didn’t have good enough goose shoulders to create a good wing for this #3/0 hook. So this is a freestyle to start familiarizing myself with more classic salmon tying, but not following any particular pattern. I also mix up different styles here, but this is just for practicing thread control and placements.

dryfly.me.2014.04.23.salmon_freestyle_topFront view: I like the profile it creates with the low wing and the JC sides.

52 weeks: 15 – Green

Thread: UNI 6/0 Grey
Tag: UNI-French Silver
Body: UNI-Floss Highland Green, Lagartun French Silk Floss
Rib: UNI-French Oval Med. Silver, UTC French Tinsel Med Gold
Dubbing: Seal Highlander Green (in front of the wing)
Wing: 3 colors of green templedog, Silver & Green Krystal Flash, Peacock
Sides: JC
Cone: FutureFly

A fun one to create: just get all the green I have and put it together on a fly. The optimal would be to have a green JC for the sides as well, but you can only have so many necks…
