Bibio

dryfly.me.2014.05.19.bibio

Hook: Dai-Riki 305 #13
Thread: Sheer 14/0
Tail: Polychenille
Wing: Hareline Para Post Dark Grey
Body: Hends Superfine
Thorax Cover: 2mm black foam
Legs: 0.5mm stretch nylon

First attempt at this pattern. The bibio hatch can be great and I have had some flies in my box previously, but those I’ve bought. This one is inspired by Andre Brun, but with some slight modifications on material since I didn’t have everything in the original pattern.

Bruns Caddis #14

dryfly.me.2014.05.09.brun_caddis

Hook: Mustad 94840 #14
Thread: Sheer 14/0 Yellow
Tail: Hareline Para Post Wing Dark Grey
Body: Hareline Hare-Tron Pale Yellow
Body Hackle: Whiting
Wing: Hareline Para Post Wing Dark Grey

This effective little caddis comes from The Trout Bum himself: Andre Brun (although this one is a tad bit fatter on the body). Can be tied up in different colors, but the pale yellow/grey wing is a combination that was very effective last summer and will be well used this year as well. It is also very easy to tie: just get that wing down flat over the body – clip the hackle on top and bottom to flatten the fly – it makes wonders for presantation on the river

Pheasant Tail #22 Nymph

dryfly.me.2014.05.05.pt_gold_smallHook: TMC 100 #22
Thread: Sheer 14/0 Brown
Tail: Pheasant Tail
Body: Pheasant Tail
Thorax: Hareline Hare’s Ear Plus Chocolate Brown
Bead: Taimen Tungsten 1.5mm gold

Taking the PT down to the smallest tungsten bead I have: 1.5mm, it fits on the #24 as well, but the proportions is a bit off, so I would need a 1mm bead for that and down.  These nymphs are really small, but keeping a good variation in size of the PT can’t go wrong

Compared with the #12 I did the other day:

Pheasant Tail Gold Head

dryfly.me.2014.05.03.pt_goldHook: Allen F-007 #12
Thread: Sheer 14/0 Black
Tail: Pheasant Tail
Body: Pheasant Tail
Thorax: Hareline Hare’s Ear Plus Chocolate Brown
Wing Case: Pheasant Tail
Legs: Mallard Flank
Bead: 3.0mm Tungsten Gold flysite.co.nz

Tying up some slightly longer and slimmer PT nymphs than I have tied up before. The legs on the side is a good visual clue and the gold head should get this down, but will make a version with lead in the thorax as well to make some even heavier.

Shrimp – take 1

Hook: TMC 777SP #6
Thread: UNI 6/0 Grey
Weight: Lead
Tail: Mallard Flank
Dubbing: A.Jensen Saltwater Dub ll Gill Red
Legs: Elastic Nylon Thread 0.5mm
Eyes: BugBond on red bead
Shield: Hareline Scud Back
Resin: Bug Bond

Since seatrout fishing has gone very good lately I figured I needed some shrimps, so I got some extra material today to try out a couple of different patterns. There is still much to do on this pattern to get it right, but a good example on what I find interesting to do: exploring new patterns and ways of tying flies
