Married Wings & Jungle Cock

Rib: Black Floss, UNI-French Oval Md Silver
Wing: White & Red Goose Shoulder
Sides: Jungle Cock
Throat: Hen, Black
Head: Ostrich Herl

I got a small patch of Jungle Cock as a present the other day and I have had some plans to start tying classic salmon flies this winter, so I’m starting with very simple versions to learn the layering and marrying of wings and building up materials.

This one ended up not too bad, I had some problems with tying in the married wings and the throat should have been tied in under the ostrich herl. I also feel that the wing is a bit too long ( and the tip of the wing just didn’t marry very well )

As you can see from the top-down picture: the jungle cock almost aligns and the wings looks decent for now.

Rabbit Zonkers

Tail/Body: Single strip of Rabbit Zonker, Tan

Never worked with Zonkers before, but this might be the simplest one yet: a single strip of Rabbit zonker, wrapped around the hook, tied in with thread. I fished this last weekend and got myself a Pollock, so I know it works. The Zonker really flows in the water: the tail and the body hair on this makes for very fluid motion. Of course I had to get a couple of other colors for the sea-trout fishing I’m going for this weekend.

UTC Ultra Wire SM

The UTC Ultra Wire SM is a wire for building Copper John Nymphs, rib on czech nymphs, emergers, fully dressed salmon flies and a lot more. Wire in general is good to have available for a variety of patterns: I would keep a gold and a silver if I could only have two colors. I have tied up on a couple of different size hooks to show how it compares to the thickness of the hook.

Wrapping two different colors makes a good segmented body for small nymphs

Green & Red Wetfly

Hook: Dai-Riki 305 #10
Thread: UNI  8/0 Black
Tail: Golden Pheasant,
Body: Red Floss, Black Floss wrapped around
Wing: Turkey Biot, Lt. Olive
Chin: Whiting Bronze, Brown

My first attempt on a classic wet-fly, took what material I had at hand and proceeded to get something together that wasn’t half bad. Been looking into traditional wet-fly fishing lately and my next project will be to tackle some of Bergman’s “Trout” patterns
