flyhooks.org – similar hooks

flyhooks.partridge.cs10-3.3-0-grid

Yesterday I entered a lot of new data on flyhooks.org about the properties of a hook, today it was time to start using that data for something good: similar hooks.

Whenever you go to a hook you get a automatic search that looks for other hooks that have similar measurements as the hook you are looking at, it will only search on the measurements that the hook have and it will (for now) look at hooks that are within +/- 15% of each size.

Here is a example on Mustad 94840, to the far left is the size of the 94840 (we match on each hook size, not a total for all sizes) and then the hooks that matches that size. As you can see on the numbers: the left number is the size for the 94840 size, then it is the matching hook number to the right of the arrow.

The search is still early in its development, but I wanted to get it out there to start being used so that I could get some feedback. The search will improve over the next few weeks as I update the last 188 hook sizes that don’t have Throat, Shank Length & Eye width measurements on.

Other examples:

flyhooks.org – 110 new hooks

The last couple of weeks I’ve received a lot of new hooks, and today I have uploaded a total of 110 new images of hooks to flyhooks.org! This brings the total up to a total of 298 images on the site, closing in on 300 hook sizes documented.

There are also some new companies added: Dohiku, Ken Sawada, Blue Heron. I will spend some time over the next weeks getting all the hooks from these new companies added, for now I’ve added the ones I have images of.

You will see on the new hooks that I’ve uploaded today that there are three new metrics on them: “T – Throat (bite)”, “SL – Shank Length” and “E – Eye width”. I’ll get back with some specific information on how I do this, but the SL is measured from the end of the bend and to the start of the shank, the throat is the depth from the hook poin to the bend while the eye is the total width (including wire) of the eye.

The next weeks I’ll update the 188 old hooks with SL, T & E information and upload new images of them, I’ll also add a better search where you can use the measurements of a hook to search by (“give me all hooks that have SL between 6.50 and 7.25”, “give me all hooks where the wire is above 0.70mm and throat is less than 6mm”).

I’m getting more hooks in the mail shortly, but if you do have some hooks that you can donate to this project: please contact me! I’ll post more information tomorrow about some of the new hooks that I’ve added today.

flyhooks.org update

flyhooks.alecjackson.2061.15-grid-0-1024-1024
A update tonight:
  • Collections: http://flyhooks.org/eide/collections – here you can create collections of hooks that you can use to compare them and/or show which hook you are using for different target species.
  • All hooks in a collection links back to their respective collection, see: http://flyhooks.org/tiemco/tmc777sp
  • Transition between images are now instant on collection & hook page – this will make it easier to compare hooks.

More hooks coming very soon!

fly-sites updated

It has been quiet here for a week or so, and with good reason: last week I was doing some maintenance on the fly-sites (flyhooks/flytyer/flyrods) and discovered that I’ve neglected it for quite a while! The base cms I based it on was outdated and not supported anymore, the libraries was outdated, and when I started to look at the structure it just wasn’t good enough to do rapid updates to the site….

This weekend I sat down and ported all the sites to a new CMS and re-built the entire admin and user-facing sites…. This took quite some time, but today I pushed the changes to my server and restarted apache! And it failed… but only for 5minutes since I forgot something in the upgrade script ;)

Everything should be back to where it once was and the functionality is as it was last week. But: if you do find anything not working: let me know!
