A pattern that follows the spaykutling but in all-black colors. This comes from the rabbit skin I bought earlier and that I have cut strips from. The hair is really long and makes for some meaty flies that will create a lot of good movement in the water.

After doing the hairwing mickey finn the other day I browsed alternative versions to see how this pattern has been interpreted in different versions (I enjoy exploring a pattern to see how it turns out in different versions, not just the original). The Mickey Streamer I found over at globalflyfisher.com together with some other variants that I will tie up later. The mickey streamer version is a married wing wet-fly style pattern in the color scheme of the original mickey finn, tied on a longer streamer hook than a classic wet would be done on.

A hairwing version of the classic Mickey Finn streamer. Normally you would see this in bucktail, but I wanted to have a smoother wing that flowed even more than bucktail (and I have alot of templedog/fox/raccoon), so a hairwing version it is. I might go over and varnish the body to strengthen it, but I used a fairly thick and solid rib, so I don’t think I will need to do that.

Another one for the saltwater box: a very simple tie-up for a fly that really stands out in the water and have the right trigger color combination (red and silver)
One of my projects this winter will be dig deeper into materials, and first out is a project to dye skins and material to see how that is done and to get more familiar with creating things from scratch. First out is rabbit skins: I got some skins the other day that I will start using for my tying. I ordered a natural brown to create the Kutling, a white to experiment with dying and a black for general zonker strips.
I tested out some different ways of cutting zonkers, but ended up with a method of creating your own zonker cutter on youtube. This has proven to work and I get consistent strips to work with. The natural brown rabbit I got had some long hairs and some good spiky tips that is perfect for the Kutling.
Here is a version where I used silver fox for the tail (instead of spey hackle) and a white salt-water dubbing from A. Jensen
Another version, but this time with a orange salt-water dubbing from A-Jensen
I have tied up a set of these and will test them out later on, but I’m quite happy with the material so far and the next thing to do is to order color to start dying that white skin. I also plan to look into bleaching and maybe buing a whole Roe skin to color and use for tying. But first things first: more rabbit!
