Simple Pheasant Tail Nymph Variation

2013.dryfly.me.pheasant_nymph_mallard_flank

Hook: Mustad 94840 #12
Thread: Sheer 14/0 Black
Tail: Pheasant Tail, Hare’s Ear Plus Chocolate Brown
Rib: UTC Ultra Wire Small Olive
Wing: Mallard Flank

This is a variant of the Simple Pheasant Tail Nymph from yesterday: only added a bit of Mallard Flank on each side. When it gets wet it will stay next to the body and give a bit more life to it.

Simple Pheasant Tail Nymph

Hook: Mustad 94840 #12
Thread: Sheer 14/0 Black
Tail: Pheasant TailHare’s Ear Plus Chocolate Brown
Rib: UTC Ultra Wire Small Olive

A very simple nymph that doesn’t take much material or time to tie up:

  • start with tying in the rib at the end
  • dub the hook until the eye
  • add the pheasant tail forward
  • dub behind the pheasant tail
  • drag the pheasant tail back to the end of the hook
  • wrap the rib forward to the eye
  • tie off

I realized the last time I was in a shallow river that I only had weighted nymphs that went straight to the bottom: tying up this together with some variants on the same theme to not be there again the next time!

No Hackle CDC

2013.06.dryfly.me.no_hackle_cdc

Hook: Mustad 94840 #18
Thread: Sheer 14/0 Brown
Tail: Whiting Bronze Brown
Body: Taimen Beaver Dubbing Brown
Wing: 2xCDC

The no-hackle CDC is very easy and with a bit of floatant it sits very nicely in the surface film. I tend to tie these with a white wing (for moving water it does help for visibility), but keep a variety of colors at hand in sizes from #22 up to #14. They are easy to tie, only involves 3 materials and will catch fish!

Green & Red Wetfly

2013.05.dryfly.me.green_wet

Hook: Dai-Riki 305 #10
Thread: UNI  8/0 Black
Tail: Golden Pheasant,
Body: Red Floss, Black Floss wrapped around
Wing: Turkey Biot, Lt. Olive
Chin: Whiting Bronze, Brown

My first attempt on a classic wet-fly, took what material I had at hand and proceeded to get something together that wasn’t half bad. Been looking into traditional wet-fly fishing lately and my next project will be to tackle some of Bergman’s “Trout” patterns

Dubbing: Wapsi Natural Nymph Blend Squirrel

This nymph blend from Wapsi was one of the first dubbing packages that I bought and I have gone through quite a few packages, I don’t know if it is because I started out with this or if it is because I really like it! The blend is easy to work with and gives a life in nymphs (and slender emerger bodies) that I appreciate.

2013.05.dryfly.me.wapsi_nymph_packageThe blend is a good mixture between fine and long fibers

2013.05.dryfly.me.wapsi_nymph_handDubbing on the thread is very easy: can be applied both in a thin and quite a thick layer on the thread

2013.05.dryfly.me.wapsi_nymph_hook

Dubbed on a Mustad 94840 #14 here, the long fibers tend to stick out and give lots of life to the body

On a Dai-Riki 135 #14 hook, with Hareline Scudback 1/8″ and Ultra wire wrapped. Here the blend comes through to its name and creates long nice legs on the fly
