A hairwing version of the classic Mickey Finn streamer. Normally you would see this in bucktail, but I wanted to have a smoother wing that flowed even more than bucktail (and I have alot of templedog/fox/raccoon), so a hairwing version it is. I might go over and varnish the body to strengthen it, but I used a fairly thick and solid rib, so I don’t think I will need to do that.

I got some Mustad S60-3399A (the new edition of 3399) this weekend and I started looking through “Trout” to see which patterns I have material for. The Abbey is the first one, and I have the material for it (except I have bronze mallard compared to the grey mallard that the pattern say), so I got around to making this version based on the original description. There are some issues with the floss, and the head is not very pretty (it bleads over into the wing a bit, this I need to practice more). But: all in all a ok effort for this one, will add a couple of more versions of this for practice before I move on.

I bought some material to start off tying the classic atlantic salmon fly Jock Scott, but I realized that I didn’t have good enough goose shoulders to create a good wing for this #3/0 hook. So this is a freestyle to start familiarizing myself with more classic salmon tying, but not following any particular pattern. I also mix up different styles here, but this is just for practicing thread control and placements.
Front view: I like the profile it creates with the low wing and the JC sides.

Spinner fall can be be the most fun you have, or the most frustrating you can come by…. I’m not quite sure where I picked up this pattern, but it is a good one where you can swap out the colors quite easy and keep in different sizes for that one day where it really matters.
The para post from Hareline is great for these patterns, I’ve used it for a caddis pattern with great success; it floats forever
Bottom view: the imprint this have from underneath is the most important. The colors are important, yes, but look at that imprint

Spent spinners are a good addition to any box that will work both in lakes and slow-flowing rivers: it gives a great profile! I tend to experiment some with a pattern when I sit down to tie up some for fishing, so this time I tied up some in different colors, with/without the foam head and with/without the tinsel wrap around the body.
The split tail is starting to align up, this takes some time the first times you tie them up!
White wings with pale-yellow body should be a good visual indicator in a river
The wrapping of the body doesn’t align up perfectly, but this is not something I tend to stress a lot with when tying up for fishing purposes.
