Pheasant Tail Gold Head

dryfly.me.2014.05.03.pt_goldHook: Allen F-007 #12
Thread: Sheer 14/0 Black
Tail: Pheasant Tail
Body: Pheasant Tail
Thorax: Hareline Hare’s Ear Plus Chocolate Brown
Wing Case: Pheasant Tail
Legs: Mallard Flank
Bead: 3.0mm Tungsten Gold flysite.co.nz

Tying up some slightly longer and slimmer PT nymphs than I have tied up before. The legs on the side is a good visual clue and the gold head should get this down, but will make a version with lead in the thorax as well to make some even heavier.

Blind Eye #3/0 freestyle

dryfly.me.2014.04.23.salmon_freestyleHook: Partridge Bartleet Blind-eye #3/0
Thread: Sheer 14/0 Black
Tag: Lagartun French Tinsel, Yellow Floss
Tail: Golden Pheasant
Butt: Ostrich
Body: Yellow  & Black Floss
Rib: Lagartun French Tinsel, UNI-Mylar
Hackle: Spirit River Schlappen
Throat: Guinea
Sides: JC
Wing: Golden Pheasant Tail, Veinard Mallard Duck Bronze Shoulder

I bought some material to start off tying the classic atlantic salmon fly Jock Scott, but I realized that I didn’t have good enough goose shoulders to create a good wing for this #3/0 hook. So this is a freestyle to start familiarizing myself with more classic salmon tying, but not following any particular pattern. I also mix up different styles here, but this is just for practicing thread control and placements.

dryfly.me.2014.04.23.salmon_freestyle_topFront view: I like the profile it creates with the low wing and the JC sides.

Parachute dry

dryfly.me.2014.04.19.dry_parachuteHook: Knapek Wet Fly #10
Thread: Sheer 14/0 Black
Tail: Mallard Flank
Body: Spirit River Rabbit-Tron Western March Brown
Rib: Sybai Flat Tinsel Holographic Black 0.4mm
Hackle: Whiting Bronze
Wing post: Hareline Para Post Dark Grey

One of those that will work under different hatches. The starting point was the dubbing and tinsel that I found in a drawer and that I hadn’t used before. The hook is a wet-fly hook, but it is very light and will make the fly sit nicely in the surface.

Here is one variant with dust broom wing and pearl tinsel: dryfly.me.2014.04.19.dry_parachute_dust_broom

Hvitvinge

dryfly.me.2014.04.16.hvitvingeHook: TMC 100BL #12
Thread: Sheer 14/0 Yellow
Body: Fly-Rite Extra Fine Poly #9 Golden Yellow
Wing: André Brun Closed Cell Foam
Head: Deer

A while back I was north in Norway and had one of these in my box (this was before I had started tying), and had very good luck with it. This “Hvitvinge” from André Brun is a great moth imitation that makes a lot of noice and movement on the surface and will keep on floating forever. I bought a couple of bags with the foam from André Brun and got it in the mail yesterday, I had to tie up a round of these on a TMC 100BL to see how it is to work with. Once you get the layering and tying in of the foam (at around the second fly), this is a quick and effective fly to tie up. Will experiment with some different body/head color and also tie it up on a non-bl hook.
