Midge Emerger

Body: Polishquills Stripped Peacock Eye Orange
Thorax: SLF Squirrel
Wing: White CDC

Midge season is soon upon us, so I have started to do a inventory on my flyboxes to see what I have and what I’m missing. So: midges will be focus for a while and you will see different midge patterns appearing here in the time to come.

What is your favorite midge pattern?

52 weeks: 10 – Sky is the limit

dryfly.me.2014-11.sky_is_the_limitHook: Dai-Riki 899 #1/0
Thread: Sheer 14/0 Black
Tag: UTC French Tinsel
Body: Wapsi Angora Goat Kingfisher Blue
Rib: UTC French Tinsel
Body Hackle: Schlappen White & Grey
Throat: Spirit River Spey Hackle Bright Blue
Side: The Fly Co Ringneck Kingfisher Blue, JC
Wing: Veniard Mallard Duck Bronze Shoulders Medium

With the theme “sky is the limit” I started with the blue as a center piece and decided to got for a spey-style fly composed around blue/white/grey. This is the first spey-style fly I have done and I think the colors and flow of it came out ok. The Wing could be a bit flatter, but I did have some issues tying them in.

Wing: Wapsi Sparkle Organza
Thorax: Fly-Rite Extra Fine Poly Rust

Tying up for a caenis swap with a spent #30 – trying to incorporate  tail, rib, wing and dubbing on a hook this small is a challenge that you should undertake from time to time. This will really get your thread-control skills up a couple of levels

CDC&Deer caddis on #16BL

dryfly.me.2014.03.03.dry_individualHook: TMC 100BL #16

Body: Hareline Hare’s Ear Brown/Dark Olive, Hareline Hare’s Ice Dub Rusty Orange
Wing: CDC & Deer in different colors

Following up on my post a while back when I started on re-filling my boxes before summer: next up here are 3 rows of CDC&Deer tied on a barbless  TMC 100BL #16 hook. These will be good for my #0 and #1 rod when going after small brook trout. I have two rows of barbless left where I will do #12 with the center row color-combination before I start on the other side of the box that will match this, but not with barbless hooks.

dryfly.me.2014.03.03.dry_topThe green row to the left is the one that I had most success with last summer:

CDC & Deer on barbless

Wing: Green CDC, Hareline premium deer

The winter has been spent experimenting and trying out different things: everything from #32 to large hair-wing tube flies have been tied to get a grip of the different techniques and materials. But: I got a good deal on 3 boxes of TMC 100BL in #12, #14 and #16 the other day and it is time to think about the summer and the trout. If you have followed this blog you have seen this pattern before (in various colors), but this is my favorite combination: green cdc and white deer hair. It floats in the water like a cork and works very good in rapid streams, this fly got over half my trout in the 2013 season!

This year I’m tying up a batch of barbless as well, and starting out with some rows of #12 before filling the box with #14 and #16 as well – going barbless on trout that I go after with my #1 and #0 is a thing I will start doing (have not fished much with barbless before, but this year I will), so I will keep a box of these with me at all times.
