William Blacker: Standard Flies 5. Soldier Palmer Fly

Tip: Gold

Front-hackle: Two black-red

Soldier Palmer Fly from The Art of Angling by William Blacker. The one above is tied in hand on a vintage blind-eye hook, while the three below all are tied for fishing on Ahrex FW580 #10.

With some floatant this should be situated just in the surface, or fished just underneath the surface for some good action!

William Blacker: Standard Flies 4. The Sooty Olive Fly

Tip: Gold
Body: Dark olive mohair
Throat: Dark olive hackle
Wing: Woodcock or starling.

I found a deep green hackle deep in my hackle box that really matched the mohair in the body. A patch that I didn’t remember, but showed up just in time for this pattern that I believe in: the color, the movement and shape should give plenty of trout this summer! A variant should be a spider-version without the wing

William Blacker: Standard Flies 2. The Grouse Hackle

Tip: gold
Body: Gold or orange silk
Legs: Grouse

A spider pattern that should give plenty of movement and fish! The grouse hackle is something I should use more of going forward with variants over this pattern!
