This one started with the dubbing: I got some good kingfisher blue from Horns the other day and I built this fly around that color. The dubbing is great and I found some templedog that matched in color. I really tried to keep it down in number of materials and not have it super-big when it came to the wing. This one I will tie up in different variations before I even have fished it: one that I just “know” will work when it hit the water

I do a lot of this: just sit down and try to see how things come together, some times it is based on patterns, other times it is just freestyle based on what I have in front of me. These two came out of one of those freestyle sessions where I just played with materials to see how they fit together.

Pale Yellow Balloon Caddis

Following up from the other day I tied up a batch of pale yellow (Hare-Tron Pale Yellow dubbing for body) balloon caddis. I also tried with black/red foam on a couple of them to see how that came out.

I added a bit of white CDC on top of the wing to add a bit of extra life to the fly:
