CDC Nymph Experiment

2013.06.dryfly.me.cdc_nymphHook: TMC 2457 #10
Thread: UNI 6/0 Orange
Body: UTC Vinyl Rib Clear, ostrich herl
Wing: White CDC, Hareline Hare’s Ear Plus Dark Olive

Not quite sure where this came from: I had some ostrich herl and the clear vinyl rib on my desk, and then this just happened. I like the vinyl rib where the orange thread shows through, the ostrich herl together with the rather long CDC feather should also make this a very lively body, who knows: it might even catch a fish!

Mayfly Polychenille Body

Hook: Knapek Midge Pupae #16 Barbless
Thread: Sheer 14/0 Brown
Body: Polychenille brown, Hareline Hare’s Ear Plus Chocolate Brown
Wing: White Yarn
Hackle: Whiting

This is more of a one-time experiment to see how  the polychenille will act as a extended body on a mayfly. Have not tested out that before so it will be interesting to observe how it will behave in the river. The body together with the hackle and V-wing should be a ok profile on the water.

Vinyl-rib nymph

2013.06.kvitre.no.nymph_vinyl_ribHook: TMC 2457 #10
Thread: UNI 8/0 Green
Body: Hareline Hare’s Ear Plus Dubbin Dark Olive, UTC Vinyl Rib NYM Brown
Wing: White Mallard Flank

The visual clue from the vinyl rib on this nymph is what I think is great: the red agains the green makes it very tasty. The mallard flank should also give a hint of life when it comes into the water. This could also be done with a tungsten bead and/or some led to get it deep, but I have too much of those in my box, so I needed this to be something that didn’t go down too quickly.

Red and Yellow Attractor

2013.06.dryfly.me.red_attractor_sideHook: TMC 5263 #12 streamer hook
Thread: UNI 6/0 Black
Tail: Deer Hair Red
Body: Fly-Rite Yellow, Whiting Hackle Brown and White
Wing: Deer Hair Red

This is one of those: let’s make a lot of noise flies that are good to have available, it should trigger a reaction on the surface from any hungry trout. One thing I could have done better is to have a more slender body: there is a lot of dubbing on there now. I could should also have a thread-rib wound counter-hackle to fasten the hackle better.

As you can see in the next two pictures: this will create a very good profile on the surface. The amount of deer hair and hackle will also make this stick to the surface for a very long time.
