Tiny Midges

2014.07.29.midge_22

Hook: Mustad 94840 #22
Thread: Sheer 14/0 Black
Tail: Leftover black hackle from Whiting
Body: Hends Superfine
Hackle: Whiting Bronze

It has been a busy summer with a lot of fishing, this particular midge in size #18 got me a 850gram grayling up north, so I need to get some more, but in even smaller size. Easy to tie up (as long as you have small enough hackle) and the fish will hunt this down!

Bruns Caddis #14

dryfly.me.2014.05.09.brun_caddis

Hook: Mustad 94840 #14
Thread: Sheer 14/0 Yellow
Tail: Hareline Para Post Wing Dark Grey
Body: Hareline Hare-Tron Pale Yellow
Body Hackle: Whiting
Wing: Hareline Para Post Wing Dark Grey

This effective little caddis comes from The Trout Bum himself: Andre Brun (although this one is a tad bit fatter on the body). Can be tied up in different colors, but the pale yellow/grey wing is a combination that was very effective last summer and will be well used this year as well. It is also very easy to tie: just get that wing down flat over the body – clip the hackle on top and bottom to flatten the fly – it makes wonders for presantation on the river

Palmer Midge

Thread: Sheer 14/0 Black
Body: Peacock, Whiting Hackle

Midge season is coming shortly and one of the things you need in the box here in Norway is this palmer midge. A very simple pattern that is quick to tie up a row of in sizes from #14 down to #22

dryfly.me.2014.03.27.palmer_midge_sideThe cork where I have mounted the midges comes from the Sorachi Ace bottle from Brooklyn brewery – if you get a chance to taste this I would recommend sharing a bottle with a friend!

Olive F-Fly

Hook: Mustad 94840 #14
Thread: Sheer 14/0 Brown
Body: Hareline Turkey Biot Quills Lt.Olive
Wing: 2xCDC Olive

A simple, but very effective pattern that I have tied on anything from #12 down to #24, but mostly in sizes #14-#18. The variation possibilities on the body is great here and can be thread, dubbing, ultra wire rib on thread body and much more. Tie up to match different colors and sizes, it can’t go wrong

Renegade

Hook: Mustad 94840 #18
Thread: Sheer 14/0 White
Tag: UTC Wire silver
Bead: Whiting Brown, peacock herl, Whiting white

Another pattern from “tying small flies” by Ed Engle: Renegade. I chose a silver tag instead of the gold in the original pattern. A interesting pattern that should float nicely in the surface and give a good profile.
