Flyfishing, flytying and hooks

52 Weeks: 5 – Vegetables

So: a vegetable, and with a lot of tube flies done the last weeks it had to be a carrot on a tube this week! The CDC might work in water, but it will be pushed out and back, so I’ll see how this one works later.

Micro Zonker Tube

dryfly.me.2014.02.02.tube_micro_zonkerTail: Wapsi Micro Pine Squirrel Zonker Olive
Body: Hareline Chenille, Wapsi Micro Pine Squirrel Zonker Chartreuse
Flash: 4 strands of green flash
Hackle: Wapsi Strung Schlappen Green/Black
Cone: Future Fly Drainer Disc 8mm Metallic Green

Found this video describing how to use zonker on a tube, so I had to give it a go: I have used these micro zonkers before – the movement of these pieces are great. The pattern is really simple with a strip as tail, a strip wrapped around the body and then some hackle to finish it up.

The rear-view shows how the zonker have been wrapped around the tube:

Baitfish

dryfly.me.2014.02.01.baitfishSaturday morning and the snow has been coming down for a week straight! These quiet mornings is good for stocking up on some patterns that will come in handy when the spring comes and it is time to get the rod out again after a long winter. Today it is a batch of longer baitfish that I did a SBS on last year, I will also have some that are shorter and only 1 hook length tail, but I’ll save that for later this weekend.

Music for today: Access To Arasaka: “Medway”

Last year I had some great action with these hunting mackerel

CDC & Deer on barbless

dryfly.me.2014.01.29.cdc_deerHook: TMC 100BL #12
Thread: Sheer 14/0 Green
Body: Hareline Hare’s Ear Plus Dark Olive
Wing: Green CDC, Hareline premium deer

The winter has been spent experimenting and trying out different things: everything from #32 to large hair-wing tube flies have been tied to get a grip of the different techniques and materials. But: I got a good deal on 3 boxes of TMC 100BL in #12, #14 and #16 the other day and it is time to think about the summer and the trout. If you have followed this blog you have seen this pattern before (in various colors), but this is my favorite combination: green cdc and white deer hair. It floats in the water like a cork and works very good in rapid streams, this fly got over half my trout in the 2013 season!

This year I’m tying up a batch of barbless as well, and starting out with some rows of #12 before filling the box with #14 and #16 as well – going barbless on trout that I go after with my #1 and #0 is a thing I will start doing (have not fished much with barbless before, but this year I will), so I will keep a box of these with me at all times.

A couple of double salmon flies tied up on a sunday morning. The snow is coming down hard: coffee and good music together with fly-tying is a good combination on such days!
