I often sit down and try to see how colors blend together and try to figure out how they will work. Many times I get the inspiration from other tiers on facebook, G+, forums and so on: I see some hook or pattern and I get a idea on what I want to do. Lately I have looked at a lot of dee flies and done a lot of big-wing tubes, so I try to mix it up like this: the concept of long body hackle and a hair-wing.

This one I will bring with me when I go seatrout fishing

Pheasant Tail

Thread: Sheer 14/0 Brown
Body: Pheasant Tail, UTC Wire gold
Thorax: Spikey dubbing, Lead, spikey dubbing, Pheasant tail
Bead: Tungsten Bead 3.0mm flysite.co.nz

My order of tungsten beads from flysite.co.nz came in over christmas, I have only had gold/silver/black beads before so this time I ordered in some additional colors to see how they turn out.  The pheasant tail is very easy to tie up and is one of those patterns you should have available if you target trout. It is also a pattern you can vary a lot: this one is weighted with lead in addition to the tungsten bead, but you can make it slim, light, fat, long, small and vary in the dubbing for the thorax (as I have done on these): keep some different variations with you on the river.

Yellow Mayfly

Thread: Sheer 14/0 Yellow
Tail: Golden Pheasant
Body: UNI-Floss Br.Yellow, UTC Ultra Wire Silver
Wing: Two Mallard Flank feathers
Hackle: Whiting Bronze

For my first fishingtrip to northern Norway I bought a big, bright, yellow Mayfly that, when I got it in my mailbox, was so big I would never think it would actually fish (this was in my first year as a flyfisher). Yesterday I was going through some boxes and found it again: I did fish it, and I did get fish on it, but I had forgotten about it.

This pattern has the big mallard flank wings that can easily spin when throwing, but for shorter casts and in the right hatch this fly will be great to have available!

Two things with this attempt:

  1. the flosswork in front of the tail – you can see the thread
  2. the wings should have had a better split to see that there are indeed two mallard feathers tied in

Green, Yellow & Red Tag

Thread: UNI 6/0 Black
Tail: Orange Dyed Golden Pheasant Tippets
Tag: UNI-Floss
Butt: Black Ostrich
Body: UNI-Mylar #10 Gold/Silver
Wing: White Foxtail, Peacock
Throat: Orange Dyed Golden Pheasant Tippets

A quick and nice pattern tied primarily for salt, but will work just fine in a river targeting trout and grayling. Testing out different tag colors to see how they turn out.
