Exploring New Waters

The days are getting shorter as we go towards winter again here in Norway, but the autumn is a great time for fishing and photo hunting in the forest around Oslo. Yesterday I was out the door early to combine a photo-shoot with exploring 3 smaller lakes that I haven’t fished in before.

The rivers and 100m from the river into the lakes are no-fishing areas now in the spawning season between the 15.september and 15.november, but it is good to see running water before it freezes up soon

dryfly.me.2013.10.07.new_waters_2That crispy and clear air on a day like this:

dryfly.me.2013.10.07.new_waters_3Didn’t do any fishing here, but this is your typical small lake that you will find in the forest surrounding Oslo:

dryfly.me.2013.10.07.new_waters_4The first lake I fished in, it was dead-quiet in the air and the sun was shining: the perfect moment except for the total lack of fish…. Nothing at all came up to the surface, so after a good wait and a coffee I started testing out different patterns along the ridge of the lake and out into towards the middle. Still nothing!

A lot of these smaller lakes are slowly growing in from the edges: you end up balancing on logs to get out where you can cast ( the floating bog here can be devious! )

dryfly.me.2013.10.07.new_waters_6Still no fish, so I headed to the second lake, same result here, but the coffee was good, and I enjoyed fishing in nothing but a t-shirt ( which can be rare at this point of the year around here! )

dryfly.me.2013.10.07.new_waters_7Final place I tested out:

dryfly.me.2013.10.07.new_waters_8So: no fish this time, not even the sight of a small one out where you can never reach it! The conditions was great, but it was one of those days you just have to enjoy the weather, the fresh air and the 20km walk in solitude. I now have 3 more lakes to target for fishing when the 2014 season begins.

Came for the fish, stayed for the sunset

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAAnother friday after work and I headed out the Oslo fjord to a spot I have had for myself many times (and where I landed my first seatrout last week). You can tell that I have gone from dryfly to salt focus the last month here as the season have shifted, and these short trips where you don’t have to hike for hours to get to the really good places is a good thing to have since the sun sets earlier and earlier these days.

I had one seatrout follow all the way in to the tip of my rod (I physically didn’t have more tippet to pull – it was that close) before it turned and slowly found its way out into the dark, and another heavy *thug* on a white rabbit zonker that at least proved that the area have fish.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAAfter a couple of hours with nothing to show for it was the sunset that kept me there for the last hour – clear blue sky, no wind to talk of and a sun that slowly shifted the colors of the sky. For me fishing is (almost) as much about these moments as the fishing (ok; fishing is *slightly* more important….).

Trout in the tunnel

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAI don’t own a car, so living in Oslo with access to public transportation I love the fact that places like this is available within a very short travel from downtown Oslo. The day was spent drinking coffee next to the stream, fishing for small trout with this quill & hackle pattern, but when I got to this tunnel (it goes underneath a road) I was stuck… I tried a lot of differnent midges and mayflies, but nothing would appear or be interested in anything. Then I put on a white/green variation of the CDC&Deer  and instantly I had 3 trouts on: all taking just in the exit of this tunnel.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAWith all the foam you had to hit outside the patches of white, if not the fly was just hidden by it.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAFor rivers like this (if you get a 500g trout here it is big!) I bring my Sage TXL-F #1 and Click 1. A great combination to get out those #18/#22 with a 6x/7x tippet underneath branches and trees along the river.
