Catskill course

dryfly.me.2015.11.06.dry1

I have been tying a lot of salmon and seatrout flies this year, and that’s ok, but it’s time to go back to the roots of where I started: the dry fly! I will be focusing a lot on this the coming winter, and to start things off I went to a flytying course last night (my first ever tying course!). Niklas Dahlin had a course over 4 hours, presenting catskill tying to us, and it was a blast! Tied up these on Partriedge ideal standard dry #14 http://flyhooks.org/partridge/sud2-ideal-standard-dry with a lot of help from Niklas.

Sitting down, observing someone tying is something you should do if you get the chance: the techniques, skills and flow of a flytyer is something special to observe, and you can pick up a lot of tips.

Ordered in some new material today, and I’ll be improving my skills over the course of the next few months.

Too bad it is so long until season starts again here in Norway!

Klinkhamer

Hook: Partridge Klinkhamer X-treme #14
Thread: Sheer 14/0 white
Body: Fly-Rite #18 Rusty Orange
Thorax: Peacock
Wingpost: Poly yarn
Wing: Whiting Bronze

Time to tie up a row or two of the Klinkhamer (a good article about it here), a good patter for trout or grayling. The original pattern has peacock for thorax, but I also tie up with dubbing in different colors.

Royal Wulff From #2 to #16

The Royal Wulff I tied the other day was a part of a set of RW on the Partridge bomber hooks I have. Repeating a pattern again and again is the only thing that really makes you learn it, and now I have some great RW for salmon, and for the really hungry trout.

The length of the bomber hooks makes the body become longer and slender than you would normally see on a RW, but there should not be more hackle on these than there are now. Looking forward to float these on a stream (once all the ice has gone here in Norway)

I’m on a Salmon Bomber tying frenzy these days, but I need some other dries for salmon as well, so I figured I could pull this pattern that I’ve used very successfully for trout before up to the big league: on a #4 bomber hook!

Tying this up on size #2 to #8 to put in my salmon-dry box, more about that later. I’m on the lookout for other dries for salmon, so if you have some good tips on what I should have: give me a comment here and let me know!
