52 weeks: 7 – Dots

kvitre.no.2014-7.dotsThis week I had a plan of doing something with guinea fowl feathers that have great dots, but then I found this pattern on facebook and though: I’ll give it a go. This was a tricky one, I haven’t done much of classic salmon flies before and the real problem came when I was supposed to mount golden pheasant topping and I realised that I didn’t have any that matched ( I only have one head, and it is picked clean of the good ones….), so: I had to improvise on the topping by putting some peacock on as topping. That ruined part of the flow of this pattern, so I’ll get some new golden pheasant next time I’m in the shop.

The fly was tied on a Dai-Riki 899 #1/0

52 weeks: 6 – something old

dryfly.me.2014.-6.something_oldTail: Golden Pheasant Topping
Butt: Black Ostrich Herl
Body: UNI-Floss Dark Rust, Lagartun Varnished French Tinsel Oval
Hackle: Veniard Chinese Cock Cape Doctor Blue
Wing: Wapsi Turkey Quill, Peacock
Cheek: Golden Pheasant

For this weeks “Something Old” I tried to find something about the history of the tube fly (since I have been tying a lot of it lately), I found this article talking about the origin of the tube and  Mr. Alexander Wanless who in “The Angler And The Thread Line” from 1932 describes this fly (see the plate on the article referenced). Well: not much of description, rather a picture of it, so I set out with what I had in my box of material (that resembled) and came up with this one.

52 Weeks: 5 – Vegetables

dryfly.me.2014-5.vegetableBody: Arctic Fox Orange
Head: Ostrich herl, CDC Green

So: a vegetable, and with a lot of tube flies done the last weeks it had to be a carrot on a tube this week! The CDC might work in water, but it will be pushed out and back, so I’ll see how this one works later.

This weeks photo challenge: macro of a broccoli:

52 Weeks: 4 – Hat

dryfly.me.2013-4.hatHook: Partridge Klinkhamer X-treme #14
Thread: Sheer 14/0 Green
Body: Spirit River Fine & Dry dubbing Pale Morning Dun, UTC Ultra wire
Hackle: Whiting bronze
Wing: White&Green Polypropylene

This weeks keyword was “hat”, so I had to do something with a  hackle to represent a hat, so: a tall variant of a klinkhamer! Looking forward to “vegetables” that comes up next week!

52 Weeks: 3 – Self portrait

dryfly.me.2014-03.self_portraitThis weeks challenge was a bit tricky: should I tie something that reflects my eye color, my favorite color or something else? For a while I was stumped on what to do, but then I took my personal picture below that sums up me at the moment, and hiphop is at the center in the picture. So: hiphop it was, I couldn’t do a very creative graffiti style, but needed something that I could relate to. The salmon fly above is what I came up with, I call it “Adidas superstar” with gold stripes (the white thread on the rib represents the stitches on the shoe) and the shiny shell toe.

This is my favorite shoe and I always have a couple of colors (most often black /white ones) available. The adidas superstar and the three-stripes is something you will see if you look at old-school hiphop videos and breakdancing, so that is where I took the inspiration for this weeks theme, and hiphop is absolutely something that defines me.
